Chinchilla Appreciation Society of America (CASA)
"Mi CASA es su CASA"

Founded in 1884 By Hubert McKnogenell
Sung to the tune of "America the Beautiful"

From forests green
In far off lands
You hear the mighty call
Chinchillas sing all through the night
The lovely grey fur balls
Chinchilla, Chinchilla
I long to gaze on thee
And rub thy fluff
You're small and tough
What greater rat would be?

If only all the animals
Were as round and fat as you
Bellies would flop and time would stop
As cross the oceans blue
We sang our love to those of fat
And rubbed the bellies round
And they could bathe and they could play
In dust upon the ground

We pledge our love to you grey rat
And swear to honor thee
Promote the knowledge of your kind
To our society
Chinchilla, Chinchilla
One day they all will sing
About your fame
Proclaim your name
From belly to belly

There are many species of Chinchilla.
Most people know about the small domesticated type often kept as pets.
Very few know of the highly intelligent Giant Chinchillas.

Hubert the Great was the original leader of a band of Amazonian (Giant) Chinchillas, the Flufflecintus, not to be confused with the better known Flufflekinktus. When the famed Hernando Cortez arrived in the New World, Hubert the Brave, as he was also known, was the only Chinchilla willing to introduce Cortez to the magic of Chinchilla society. Though the records no longer exist, some say that Cortez was so mystified by this flufftastic creature that he wrote the villanelle "Oh to be so Round and Fat". Obviously the original was in Spanish and much is lost in translation, but the poem stands as a testament to the great Chinchilla societies of the past.

Hubert was chosen by his democratically run tribe to travel across the never-ventured sea to the land of Spain. Hubert was quite the hit at the royal Spanish Court (they say he was quite the ladies Chinchilla) and remained there for 10 years. However, he was shocked by the Inquisition, Chinchillas being a naturally personal and shy breed, and felt he must return home to peace. As he was to leave Seville, he was stunned to see a beautiful veiled Chinchilla, Rosa Maria, batting her enormously long eyelashes at him from a balcony. Struck with love he remained in Spain to have a large family. Many of his progeny became the darlings of royal courts throughout Europe. It is believed that Cecilia is the great-great grandchild of Hubert.
