Little to nothing is known about the mysterious doctor.  A celebrated dermatologist, he was a pioneer in the treatment of syphilis.  He set up clinics and departments to study and find a cure for the dreaded venereal disease.  He also wrote landmark books on the subject, taught at the University of Pennsylvania Medical School, bore five children, bore a striking resemblance to those children, and then later made the arguably erroneous decision to never know his five grandchildren.  This last one was more than likely not his decision to make, and he probably would have chosen otherwise.  He passed away before any of them were born.

UPDATE: THIS PHOTO HAS BEEN REVEALED TO BE A DOCTORED FAKE!!! (sorry)

It's difficult to know when the above photograph was taken, but presumably it depicts the reunion of Madam Gingerbell and Dr. Stokes many years after their studies and adventures together.  Dr. Stokes had already formed his syphilis clinics and written "normal" books on medicine and such, and he had already started his family.  Madam Gingerbell had already forsaken her matriarchy of the Prines peoples of the subAtlantean archipelago, and had probably already developed her successful line of fashionable prism accessories for young human males.
