When Dr. John Hinchman Stokes was young, and he had already graduated from medical school, and he had already invented portable food (which sounds less impressive than it actually is), and he had already drawn out some early designs for a jumping helicopter, he went on a pilgrimage to the far-off ancient land of China.

And China was an interesting place.

But one morning while fishing (in a river he knew was devoid of fish), he had a Vision.   In his mind's eye, he saw a mythical city in northern Oregon.  The possibility of such a fantastic city captivated him, and he knew he must seek it out.  And so he embarked on a great quest to Oregon and had many adventures getting there, to be revealed at another time...

Dr. Stokes eventually discovered the mythical city (it took quite a bit of work in this day and and age) and found its name to be Hhapselspag, which translates roughly to "City of Enchanted Blue Spoons".  It went by many other names, but 'Hhapselspag' was a favorite of its citizenry.   Shortly upon arriving in the legendary metropolis, Dr. Stokes began to study under the tutelage of a sentient (but incapable of speech) toucan named Madam Gingerbell.  He found himself quickly surpassing his instructor however, and in a surprising and unorthodox role-reversal, accepted Madam Gingerbell as his pupil.  She quickly surpassed him, and once again, Dr. Stokes found himself the learner.  This continued for several years, with each taking turns surpassing each other and reversing the teacher-student roles.  And in the end, both M. Gingerbell and Dr. Stokes learned a lot about alien fortune-telling, telepredilictation, mindwarpage, treehealing, and most importantly, themselves.
